We can use turn up to mean increase the volume or level of something. The opposite of turn up is turn down. Anything that has an up/down adjustment can be turned up or turned down. Turn up also means to arrive somewhere randomly, like turning up to a party you’re not invited to. When something is lost, it might turn up somewhere, eventually. If you’re down on your luck, you might be hoping that there will be a turn up in fortune. If you bought a pair of trousers, but they don’t quite fit, you might think about bringing them to a tailor and getting them turned up. Throughout the early 2000s, it was trendy for teenagers to turn up their collar; in America, they call it popping your collar.
