They can be advisable to take some notes so that you can keep track of what has been said and to make it easier, to sum up, or conclude at the end. Sometimes somebody will be asked to keep notes (on paper or a whiteboard) or to keep track of the time. If you volunteer for either of these roles make sure you don't get distracted and that you do the job well.
