To ‘abhor’ means to feel a strong aversion or intense dislike for something. Unlike other similar words, this term tends to be used particularly in relation to a hatred of a way of behaving or thinking that goes against your principles and which you, therefore, regard as immoral.

1. I abhor violence. It goes against everything I believe in.

2. The politician claimed that her comments were taken out of context and that she considered all forms of racism to be abhorrent.

3. Jane has an abhorrence of any kind of cruelty towards animals. That’s why she works in wildlife conservation.
