Hospitality - Tell us About Yourself

Answer

Well, I have recently completed a Degree in Hotel Management and although I have the qualification, I am fully aware that I need hands-on experience in the job before applying for a full management position. This trainee position would suit me down to the ground as I'll be learning on the job. My interest in the Hospitality sector was sparked through holidays I went on with my family as a child and through my teens. I always enjoyed speaking with Hotel staff and admired how they treated guests. I have always felt that I have a lot to give when it comes to Customer Service, and this is the backbone of the Hospitality sector. I have worked in two Hotel Bars, a Hotel Restaurant and was part of a front-of-house Reception team while working towards my Degree. During my time behind the bar, I picked up some good traits. I noticed one of the Barmen giving children diluted drinks on the house, and the children's parents really appreciated these gestures. Little things like that brought in big tips, but more importantly, the gestures were highlighted through online reviews and brought in more custom to the Hotel. Small kindnesses go a very long way in the trade.

Analysis

The Interviewee highlights their Degree and recent experience but hints that they still have a lot to learn and that's why they are coming in at trainee level. Being conscious of this and knowing their current boundaries would be something the employer would pick up on. That can be somewhat of a skill in itself.

The Interviewee also touches on one of the most important skills required in the field - Customer Service. He/she gives a number of examples of how it worked previously to bring customers back into a Hotel.

One thing that stands out with this Interviewee is the manner in which they speak. When you consider the type of job this is, it makes you think of the type of person that would be hired for the role. This Interviewee comes across as extremely polite and articulate, which also makes them stand out.

Overall, the Interviewee kept it short and sweet. Keeping it brief and also laying the foundations for future questions was the route this Interviewee took. They led the employer straight to their points because they kept it so concise. Delivering their answer in this way keeps the valid information fresh in the mind of the employer, or it could quite possibly lead them straight into asking questions relevant to the points made before moving on to their next question.
