How to Talk About Making and Discussing Plans

2. Present Simple

Most English speakers use Present tenses to talk about future plans, which makes them feel more immediately engaged in what's going to happen. It's a tense that is used to talk about schedules for public transport, as you can see from Figure 2:

If you have a flight booked for tomorrow, you can say 'I leave for America in the morning. I'm so excited!'. In this sentence, the time-frame of tomorrow morning works with the Present Simple verb form 'leave' to talk about the future. Following the pattern of Present Simple, the verb form changes to 'leaves' if you are talking in the third person or about inanimate objects or events (see Figure 2)

So, with scheduled sports events, we can say 'The match starts at 7pm.' You'll also hear news reports using the Present Simple to talk about future scheduled events, such as 'The President addresses the nation tomorrow.'
