How to Use the Future Continuous

The Future Continuous is used to talk about an action that is expected to take place at a time in the future. We can use the future continuous to imagine ourselves or place ourselves at a point in time in the future. This video will help you remember the grammar rules and formula for the future continuous tense in English and when to use it.

The future continuous is constructed with the subject, 'will be' and the verb with ing.

subject + will be + verb + ing

She will be here on Friday.

I will be working at the weekend.

They will be arriving in August.

The future continuous allows us to picture ourselves in the middle of an ongoing action in the future.

I will be in Paris in July.

I will be at home later.

He will be running in the race on Saturday.

It can also be used in order to be specific about the time at which the ongoing action in the future will be taking place.

I will be at the cinema at 9pm.

At 8pm I will be driving home.

I will be finished by 7.

We can use the future continuous to talk about one action or event being interrupted by another.

He'll be sleeping when you arrive.

She'll be performing when the music starts.

I'll be waiting when you are finished.

The interrogative form of the future continuous can be used to ask questions about future situations.

What will you be doing on Friday?

What will she cook for dinner?

When will they be ready to leave?

You can also use it to emphasise the duration of an action in the future.

He will be working all day.

She will be staying for five weeks.

I will be away for a few hours.
