Chance meeting/happen to meet

When you have a 'chance meeting', or 'happen to meet' somebody, you unexpectedly encounter or run into them somewhere.

Examples

  • Jane landed a job at the company after a chance meeting with an executive at an art gallery.
  • If you happen to meet Alice later, please tell her to give me a call.
  • I had no idea that Gary was going to be there. It was just a chance meeting.


Meet a standard

To 'meet a standard' means to achieve a certain level of quality or performance.  

Examples

  • You are simply not meeting the standard we require here, so I am going to have to let you go.
  • Staff uniforms are inspected every day to ensure that they meet a certain standard.
  • Only a few of the essays submitted by the students met the expected standard.
